*Official Ruby Star Society Pattern Co FREE pattern!

Ruby Star Society is giving this free pattern that uses just one Jelly Roll and 3 1/2 Yds backing and 1/2 Yd binding. This quilt finishes at 54″ square, or of course, it’s easy to make it BIGGER!

Ruby Star made this quilt using their “speckled” jelly roll, and I wanted to make one using a different fabric, just to make it a little different – theirs is fairly modern and I decided on reproduction fabrics from an old “Collection for A Cause” line. It was really a fast and fun project and I thought I’d share the process with you.

After I opened up the Jelly Roll, I starched my strips, because I could see that the finished product ends up with bias edges, (also the reason that I added a small border). It was very easy to separate the strips, and then cut them on the fold using scissors.

After I sewed them together in sets, the directions tell you to press the seams open. I started by using my regular large Rowenta Iron, and then I switched to my little tiny Rowenta travel iron – SO much easier and quicker!

And yes, that’s the cute little travel pad/carrier I made several years ago 🙂

After getting the pressing done, it was time to square up the blocks – that went pretty quickly as well 🙂

The square up size is 20.5″, so if you have a nice big square ruler it’s a plus!

Now it was time to put the blocks together, right sides facing, one block with the strips going up and down, and the facing set going side to side. You have to sew them around all four sides, with care – I made sure that I pinned them well and they sewed together with a perfect fit.

I set the seams with my steam iron, and then made the final cut!

Then I carefully pressed the blocks open, layed them out, and sewed them together. I put a small border on mine, but you certainly wouldn’t need to. This is going to be on my kitchen table by next week – I just love it! Thank you Ruby Star Society and Moda!

*and I keep coming up with fun ideas – this would be a great baby quilt, or holiday quilt, or any occasion really – it’s just a nice way to use a Jelly Roll!
